Dental Implant
- Prosthetic dentistry by tooth implant
Application of the implants
It may happen with anybody that
due to an accident, inherited reason or gums atrophy
that several teeth are missing. It can also occur
that due to decay the tooth may have to be extracted.
Tooth implants offer a modern and aesthetic solution
for missing tooth or full toothlessness, where
the tooth is implanted into the jaw - bone. The
implants can be connected either to the own teeth
or another implant. Since our jaw - bone develops
until the age of 16, implants can only be done
thereafter
Tasks preceding the treatment
In all cases a thorough dental
examination, X -ray (visiographical and panoramic)
an imprint of both jaw - bones and consultation
precede the interference. The patient receives
detailed information of the planned intervention,
its schedule, expected results, and the possible
complications.
The operation
It is important that the patient
should eat before the intervention since after
the anaesthetic injection, he/she can not eat
until the numbness holds (about 3-4 hours). The
operation is made with local anaesthetic lidocain
injection. The dentist peels the gum off from
the bone, than with the help of a special drill,
drills a thread into the bone. Next he screws
the titanium based material implants in, which
can be regarded as the new tooth root. Then he
locks the wound with stitches. The recovery phase
lasts for 4-6 months following the operation.
The ossification process begins (between the titanium
screw and the bone-tissue) and the implant infiltration
into the bone. Since the screw can not bear any
burden during the recovery phase, making a temporary
prosthesis or bridge is suggested. The second
operation should be done, when the screw is firmly
fixed in the jaw- bone. The dentist opens the
gum and screws a small head onto the fixed screw
under the gum. This stands out of the gum tissue
and is called as healing screw. The gum heals
within 2-3 days, than the dentist screws the final
heading part (this is the last phase without operation)
on, that serves as the basis of a later bridge
supplement. After taking an imprint the dental
technician prepares the proper prosthesis.
Possible complications
No problems occur at all by
95 - 99% of the built in implants and complications
are very rare. It may happen however, that the
implant can not infiltrate into the bone, because
of ossification disturbances. After the operation
one can except swelling, sensitivity and pain.
It is very important that the patient should clean
properly the screw edges at the gum rims (the
implantation success could depend on it). If an
infection reaches the bone beside the implant,
inflammation can occur, the implant can loosen,
or at worst may even fall out.
Postoperative tasks
The day after the operation the
wound has to be washed gently with a soft toothbrush.
Rinsing 2 - 3 times a day is possible with Chlorhexamed.
To poultice the face is forbidden; but the face
can be iced on the outside 5-6 times daily. After
the operation for several hours mild, leaking
bleed might occur. If it is needed, painkillers
can be taken, however antibiotics only with the
dentist’s consent. The dentist removes the stitches
in 5 - 7 days. If any problem or question roses
following the operation, the dentist must be informed
immediately.
